Implications for philosophy of metaphysics
Mooring to physics
The CoD framework is, at its core, a metaphysical claim: that existence is conference of difference, that relation precedes relata, that process is primitive and substance derivative. This section explores the metaphysical implications of this claim and situates the CoD within the history of metaphysics.
Process as primitive
The Western metaphysical tradition has largely been dominated by substance ontology: the view that reality consists of enduring substances that possess properties and undergo changes. Aristotle's ousia, Descartes' res extensa and res cogitans, Locke's substratumâall assume that change requires something that changes, that relations require something that relates.
The CoD reverses this priority. Conferenceâthe bearing together of differencesâis primitive. Substances are conferences of differences that have stabilized sufficiently to appear as enduring. A rock is not a substance that happens to have properties; it is a conference of quantum fields, atomic bonds, crystal structures, and geological history that has stabilized into the pattern we call 'rock'. A person is not a substance that thinks; they are a conference of neural assemblies, interoceptive signals, narrative identity, and social relations that stabilizes into the pattern we call 'self'.
This reversal aligns with a minority tradition in Western philosophy: Heraclitus' flux, Whitehead's process philosophy, and Eastern philosophy: Buddhist anatta (no-self) and pratÄ«tyasamutpÄda (dependent origination). But the CoD offers a more systematic account: it does not merely assert that everything changes, but provides a framework for understanding how change occurs (through conference of difference) and what persists through change (the stabilized pattern of the CoD, not substance).
Relation as prior to relata
If the conference of difference is primitive, then relations are prior to relata. A relatum (the thing that relates) is an abstraction from a conference of differenceâa node in a network that has been temporarily stabilized for analytical purposes.
This has profound implications for metaphysics. Traditional debates about universals and particulars, about identity and difference, about unity and multiplicity, are transformed. From the CoD perspective:
- Universals are patterns of conferring that recur across contextsâcompressed conferences that have proven generative across multiple instances.
- Particulars are conferences that are sufficiently stabilized to be individuatedânodes in the cosmic conference of difference that can be distinguished from others.
- Identity is not the persistence of a substance but the continuity of a conferring pattern. A person remains the same person not because they have the same soul or body but because their pattern of conferringâtheir autobiography, their relationships, their habitsâcontinues with sufficient coherence.
- Difference is not secondary to identity (as in the tradition from Parmenides to Hegel) but primitive. Identity is difference stabilized; without difference, there is no identity to be had.
Time and eternity
The classical debate between Presentism (only the present is real) and Eternalism (past, present, and future all exist in a static 'block universe') is a false dichotomy. Both positions share a common error: the reification of time as an existent dimension rather than an abstract value derived from the conference of difference.
The CoD framework transforms this understanding. As argued in the Abstract Domain chapter, space and time are not existents but abstractaâconceptual frameworks revealed by the conference of difference, not dimensions in which existence occurs. Existence is not a static thing but a continuous, dynamic processâthe conference of difference itself. This ongoing negotiation is what we sense as the 'present.' The present is not an infinitesimal point on a timeline; it is the process of the CoD. Only the conference of difference exists.
From this foundation, past and future are revealed as constructs generated in the sensed present. The 'past' is a present-moment recollectionâa narrative constructed from sensory records, memories, and physical evidence, all accessed and interpreted in the conference of difference we perceive as the 'present.' Its fixity is not that of a frozen block but the ontological irreversibility of that which has been expressed. As the conference of difference actualizes, that actuality is immutableânot because it exists in a past dimension but because the actuality itself is irreversible.[1]
The 'future' is a present-moment predictionâa projection of potential generated in the conference of difference sensed as 'now' and informed by recollections of what we conceive as 'past.' It is a field of unrealized potential, the focus of what the conference of difference is actively working toward. In CoD terms, future conferences are not yet; they are projected as possibilities from present conferring.
Time, then, is the abstract value we assign to measure the rate of transformation within the conference of difference in order to sequence our recollections and aid predictions. It is a map created by the conference of difference that permits sentient beings to navigate the terrainânot the terrain itself. The CoD agrees with relativity that there is no universal, privileged nowâsimultaneity is observer-relative.[2] But where Eternalism concludes that past, present, and future must therefore all exist as equal locations, the CoD draws the opposite conclusion: only the conference of difference exists. The present is not a point in a static block but the locus of conferringâwhere recollected past is borne together with projected future into the ongoing conference of difference perceived as now.
The necessity of physical mooring
A central challenge for any metaphysical framework is to avoid becoming mere speculationâa system of thought that floats free from the very reality it purports to describe. The term metaphysics itself, literally "after physics," implies a derivation from the observation of the physical world. If metaphysics is to possess genuine validity rather than serve as historical curiosity, this etymological imperative must be honored. The CoD framework embraces this necessity, grounding its central claim in the constitutive patterns of physical existence.
The Western philosophical tradition contains rich veins of insight, but a significant strandâparticularly in continental philosophy from German Idealism through much of 20th-century French existentialismâhas often proceeded as if it could construct systems of meaning independent of scientific observation. This has resulted in philosophies that, however linguistically sophisticated, fail to keep pace with or account for the physical reality disclosed by modern physics, cosmology, and biology. They become, in effect, unmoored from the very existence they seek to explain, reducing their value largely to historical interest.
The CoD framework is, in its essence, an argument for an observably grounded metaphysics. Its central claim, $\exists = \lbrace\Delta\rbrace$, is not derived from a priori reasoning but is inferred from the constitutive condition of all physical reality, as demonstrated in the CoD thesis's analysis of an elementary particle, a solar system, and a thought. This is metaphysics in its original sense: a disciplined inquiry that proceeds after and is constantly tested by our best understanding of physics.
The framework does not merely append scientific examples to philosophical concepts. It argues that the conference of difference is the process primitive disclosed by and principal to physical existence itself. The stability of a quantum field excitation, the dynamics of a solar system, and the emergence of thought are all distinct, observable conferences of difference. The metaphysical claim is the formalization of this observable constant across domains.

Figure 1: The productive application of metaphysics in science
This physical mooring has profound consequences:
- It provides a reality check for metaphysical claims. Any assertion about the nature of being, time, or identity must be consistent with and illuminate our physical understanding of these phenomena. Metaphysical speculation untethered from physical observation is not a higher form of inquiry but an abdication of it.
- It reconnects philosophy with its original purpose. The great pre-Socratic philosophers were natural philosophers, their inquiries inseparable from observations of the cosmos. The CoD framework participates in this tradition, viewing philosophy and physics not as separate disciplines but as complementary modes of conferring on the same reality. The physicist describes the behavior of conference; the metaphysician articulates its principle.
- It offers a pathway to synthesize scientific and humanistic inquiry. By grounding metaphysics in physics, the CoD framework can serve as a bridge, allowing the insights of the humanities and social sciences to be understood as complex, emergent conferences of difference without being reduced to mere physics. A poem, a legal system, and a political revolution are all conferences of difference, but their reality and power are not diminished; they are illuminated by being understood as dynamic processes emergent from, yet not reducible to, physical substrates.
- It enables a critique of unmoored philosophy. This grounding provides the basis for a rigorous philosophical critique of traditions that ignore or contradict well-established physical knowledge, not as a matter of taste but as a matter of intellectual coherence. From this perspective, the value of historical philosophy is not in its ungrounded conclusions but in its attempts to capture aspects of the conference of differenceâattempts that can now be understood, completed, and corrected within the CoD framework.
The CoD, therefore, does not claim to be a philosophy that has escaped physics. It claims to be the metaphysics that was always already after physics, now made explicit. Its validity will be proven not by its elegance alone, but by its generative capacity to illuminate physical reality and to provide a coherent ground for all other forms of inquiry that remain in conference with it. This is its primary claim to philosophical relevance in the 21st century.
The CoD in philosophical context
The CoD framework synthesizes insights from the 37 ontologies examined in Section 2, resolving their tensions and integrating their contributions. The table below sketches this synthesis:
| Ontological Tradition | Key Insight | CoD Synthesis |
|---|---|---|
| Heraclitus | All is flux; change is fundamental | The conference of difference is the process of change; flux is structured conferring |
| Parmenides/Plato | Being is eternal; change is illusion | Being is the stability of conference; becoming is conference of difference in transformation |
| Aristotle | Substance and form; actuality and potentiality | Substance is stabilized conference; potentiality is the capacity to confer differently |
| Buddhism | No-self; dependent origination | Self is a conference of differences; all phenomena arise from conferring |
| Whitehead | Process philosophy; concrescence | The CoD provides a formalization of concrescence as conference |
| Nietzsche | Will to power; perspectivism | Power is the ability to confer; perspectives are modes of conferring |
| Heidegger | Being-in-the-world; Dasein | Dasein is the conference that conferences itselfârecursive conferring |
| Deleuze | Difference and repetition | Difference is primitive; repetition is compression of conferring |
| Harman | Object-oriented ontology | Objects are stabilized conferences with autonomous conferring capacity |
The CoD does not reject these traditions but conferences themâbears their differences together into a synthesis that preserves their insights while resolving their contradictions.
Implications for metaphysical method
Finally, the CoD framework has implications for how metaphysics itself is done. If existence is conference of difference, and if this metaphysical claim is moored to and inferred from observations of physics, then metaphysical inquiry is itself a conferenceâbetween the inquirer and existence.
This means:
- Metaphysics is not a priori speculation but disciplined conferring. Metaphysical claims must be tested against their capacity to enable generative conferring across domains.
- Pluralism is necessary. No single metaphysical system can conference all differences; metaphysics requires ongoing conference between traditions.
- Self-recursivity is essential. A metaphysics of conference must apply to itself: this thesis is a conference of differences between ontologies, between domains, between the author and the reader.
- Humility is warranted. The CoD is not the final word but an invitation to further conference of difference.
Conclusion: The Conference of Conferences
The metaphysical implications of the CoD are radical: existence is conference; relation precedes relata; process is primitive. This is not a rejection of the Western metaphysical tradition but its fulfillmentâa synthesis that bears together the insights of two and a half millennia of inquiry into a framework adequate to the challenges of the 21st century.
The CoD is itself a conferenceâof Heraclitus and Parmenides, of Aristotle and Whitehead, of Eastern and Western thought, of science and philosophy, of the human and the more-than-human. Its adequacy will be tested not by a priori logical argument alone but by its capacity to illuminate and remain in generative conference with physical reality, thereby enabling new inquiries. Does it illuminate new domains? Does it help us conference the differences that threaten to divide us?
These questions are not answered in advance. They are answered in the ongoing conference of difference that this thesis invites.
Footnotes
Heisenberg's uncertainty principle tells us that we cannot know both the momentum and position of even a single particle with perfect precision, let alone that of every existent particle, let alone restore all of those existent particles to their previous condition. Even if we imagined it possible, it would leave the conference of difference of existence to play-out exactly as it had previously. This renders time travel not only irrational and impossible but also redundant. â©ïž
The relativity of simultaneity can be understood with a simple example: an eruption of Mount Etna on Sicily. An observer on the nearby island of Malta will see the explosion before an observer in distant Sardinia. There is no single answer to 'What is happening on Sicily right now?' The 'present moment' for a distant event depends entirely on the observer's location. Relativity extends this idea, showing that an observer's motion also fundamentally affects their definition of 'now'. This demonstrates that simultaneity is not a universal fact but a relative one, directly invalidating the idea of a single, objective present moment that Presentism requires. â©ïž
