Koan 100.6

Without difference, there is nothing to relate to; without relation, no potential for transformation—no being.

Summary exposition

This koan establishes the foundational mechanism that being is contingent upon a triad: difference, relation, and transformation. There is no bottom layer of pure distinction—only the endless, generative conference of differences, fractal and self-similar at every scale. A clear example is the voltage in a battery—itself the result of electrochemical, atomic, and quantum differences—existence is a cascade of relational processes, each both the product and the precondition of the next. The implication is that reality is fundamentally heterogeneous and relational; absolute sameness equates to ontological sterility and stasis, making difference the indispensable ground for all existence and change. Transformation is thus the process by which the dialectic of 'together' and 'against' is perpetually resolved and re-engaged. Entities declare together to form new unities, and declare against to create new distinctions—and from this endless negotiation, all becoming flows.
